Guppies
Why Guppies Are Essential in the Freshwater Aquarium Hobby
By Underwater Tropics – Tallahassee's Local Aquarium Store
When it comes to freshwater aquarium fish, guppies are one of the most iconic and beloved species in the hobby. Known for their vibrant colors, peaceful temperament, and ease of care, guppies are a perfect choice for both beginner aquarists and experienced fish keepers.
At Underwater Tropics, Tallahassee’s family-run aquarium store, we carry a wide variety of guppies for sale, including specialty strains like Dumbo Ear Guppies, Mosaic Guppies, and Dumbo Ear Guppies. Whether you're starting a small tank or building a guppy breeding setup, our guppies are healthy, colorful, and carefully selected.
Why Guppies Are Popular Freshwater Fish
Guppies are considered a cornerstone species in the world of live freshwater fish. They're social, colorful, and adaptable—making them ideal for community tanks. Over decades, guppies have been selectively bred into hundreds of strains, giving hobbyists an incredible variety of tail shapes, patterns, and colors to enjoy.
How to Breed Guppies Successfully
Guppy breeding is one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of keeping these fish. As livebearers, guppies give birth to free-swimming fry, which makes them easier to breed than many egg-laying species. Follow these steps for a successful guppy breeding setup:
Choose healthy stock – Use a ratio of one male to two or three females.
Use a planted tank or breeding box – This gives fry a place to hide.
Feed a high-protein diet – Try Hikari Fancy Guppy pellets, Fluval Bug Bites Color Enhancing, and frozen baby brine shrimp for growth and color.
Separate fry from adults – Move babies to a grow-out tank for higher survival rates.
Maintain excellent water quality – Clean, stable water helps ensure healthy fry.
A single female can give birth to 20–50 fry monthly, making guppies a perfect species for home breeding or expanding your freshwater tank naturally.
Ideal Guppy Tank Conditions
Guppies are hardy and adaptable, but they thrive in clean water and consistent parameters:
Temperature: 74–82°F
pH: 6.8–7.8
Hardness: 8–12 dGH
Minimum tank size: 10 gallons
Diet: Omnivorous – best results with Hikari, Fluval, and frozen foods
We stock all the best guppy foods in-store, including Hikari Fancy Guppy, Fluval Bug Bites, and frozen daphnia and baby brine shrimp—great options to support healthy growth and vibrant color.
Guppy Temperament & Compatibility
Guppies are peaceful fish that thrive in small groups or larger communities. Males can be a little overactive, so keep more females than males to reduce stress. Compatible tankmates include:
Corydoras Catfish
Neon Tetras
Harlequin Rasboras
Small peaceful shrimp and snails
Avoid aggressive fish or fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs or larger cichlids.

Chili Rasboras
Why Chili Rasboras Are a Must-Have for Nano and Planted Aquariums
By Underwater Tropics – Tallahassee's Local Aquarium Store
If you’re looking to add a splash of bold color and peaceful movement to your freshwater setup, Chili Rasboras are a top choice. These tiny, ruby-red fish bring life and balance to nano tanks, community aquariums, and planted displays alike.
At Underwater Tropics in Tallahassee, we carry healthy, vibrant Chili Rasboras sourced with care. Whether you're building a nature-style aquascape or want a low-bioload schooling fish, these micro beauties deliver big impact in a small package.
Why Chili Rasboras Are Popular Among Aquarists
Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigittae) are prized for their intense red coloration and schooling behavior. Growing to just under 1 inch long, they are ideal for nano tanks, shrimp tanks, and heavily planted environments. Their peaceful nature and striking looks make them a favorite for aquascapers and shrimp keepers.
These fish are naturally found in slow-moving blackwater streams of Indonesia, and they thrive in well-maintained, stable aquariums with gentle flow and low lighting.
Ideal Tank Conditions for Chili Rasboras
Chili Rasboras may be small, but they benefit from well-planned tank setups. They love the cover of plants and leaf litter and show their best color in slightly tinted water.
74–82°F
6.0–7.4
Soft to moderately hard water (2–10 dGH)
5 gallons (best in groups of 6–10 or more)
Micro-predators – thrive on Hikari Micro Pellets, Fluval Bug Bites Micro Granules, and frozen foods like daphnia and baby brine shrimp
We carry all these foods in-store to support your rasboras’ vibrant colors and natural behavior.
Chili Rasbora Temperament & Tank Mates
Chili Rasboras are peaceful and shy, best kept in schools of at least 6—though 10+ is ideal for confidence and schooling behavior. Because of their small size and calm demeanor, they do best with:
Dwarf shrimp (like Neocaridina or Caridina)
Small snails
Otocinclus Catfish
Ember Tetras
Other Boraras species
Peaceful nano fish like Pygmy Corydoras
Avoid larger or aggressive fish, especially those that might see them as food.
Chili Rasbora Breeding Tips
While Chili Rasboras can breed in the home aquarium, it’s more likely in mature tanks with moss and tannin-rich water. They scatter eggs among plants, so dense cover or spawning mops help improve fry survival. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or powdered fry food initially.
